ABOUT US
FROM THE ADRIATIC SEA TO THE HEART OF THE PEOPLE
It is the love for the sea that, every morning, wakes up the fishermen of the Adriatic Sea. In 1939, originating from a Mutual Aid Society, Coomarpesca was born, a cooperative of real fishermen driven by a passion for fishing and the tradition of fish cuisine.
A passion that, over time, moved from fishing boats at sea to the port of Fano, to the historic centres and through the streets of the city through tastings of seafood from the Adriatic Sea. From the sardoncini scottadito with clams to the “pureta”, from the broth to PesceAzzurro grilled fish cooked on the stove: every dish was always cooked a few hours after hauling up the nets and shared with the families of Fano, becoming one of the main culinary traditions of the city of Fano.

FROM FISHING BOATS TO THE MARCHE HINTERLAND
The local fishermen became – ahead of the culinary trends of today – true street food pioneers. Equipped with a large mobile food truck equipped with refrigerated units and a transportable stove, the fishermen from Fano’s cooperative took to the streets of the Marche hinterland to spread the word about the goodness and authenticity of the PesceAzzurro.
The remarkable awareness campaign of CoomarPesca became a real moment of celebration in every square across the province of Pesaro and Urbino: tastings of grilled PesceAzzurro fish were free of charge, and people gathered around the large food truck with so much curiosity and appetite.

FROM ROAMING TASTING TO FANO ‘S FIRST SELF-SERVICE RESTAURANT
Fano’s PesceAzzurro gained appreciation throughout the province. At each event organised by the fishermen’s cooperative, the presence of families, the elderly, children and curious young people increased steadily, so it was decided to open a restaurant dedicated to them. A restaurant that fully reflects the atmosphere of celebration and sharing found in the historic centres of the province and in the streets of the port of Fano.
A kind of self-service restaurant offering fish caught in the Adriatic Sea with long tables recreating the atmosphere of a festival, a place where you can sit next to someone who wants to share a meal of good fish at an affordable price. From clams to sardines, from suri to mackerel: a complete fish menu where you can taste the fish of the Adriatic Sea in starters, first courses, main courses and side dishes. The city of Fano thus becomes home to the new restaurant of the fishermen’s cooperative, “Al PesceAzzurro”.
FROM SEA TO FIRE
Simplicity and Authenticity. Here are the two keys to success of the great buzz of people created around the Al PesceAzzurro in Fano. Simplicity of structure and dishes, genuineness of a fish that is humble and at the same time rich in flavour, simplicity of service and cuisine, authenticity of fishermen and chefs. The affordable price – due to the considerable amount of oily fish in the Adriatic Sea – and the local character of the dishes offered, allowed everyone to have a healthy fish meal in peace for everyone.
With the opening of a new restaurant in Cattolica in 2009, the Al PesceAzzurro restaurant began to make a name for itself beyond the province of Pesaro.
However, the notoriety and success of PesceAzzurro also brought with it great envy and rivalry, culminating in June 2010 with a major fire in the Fano structure. But the fishermen of the Fano cooperative were certainly not known for giving up easily.
In less than a month, thanks to the great solidarity shown by the entire city of Fano, PesceAzzurro reopened on 14 July 2010 in a large temporary structure and – in less than a year – in May 2011 inaugurated the new, large self-service restaurant in Fano.

PESCEAZZURRO RESTAURANTS
Contrary to its destructive nature, that fire did nothing but ignite the souls of the PesceAzzurro fishermen’s cooperative. New ideas and new intentions began to set sail. The large turnout of guests from outside the region led PesceAzzurro to open new self-service restaurants: after Cattolica, it was the turn of Milano Marittima in 2011 and Rimini in 2012.
In 2014, PesceAzzurro turned its attention to Senigallia, the city famous for its velvet beach and unexpectedly hit by a terrible flood. On that occasion, the fishermen’s cooperative decided to contribute to the clean-up of the affected territories, donating 5 cents for each meal consumed in the different restaurants in Fano, Cattolica, Rimini and Milano Marittima.
From that act of solidarity came the opportunity to open a new restaurant, and in April 2015 PesceAzzurro’s fifth self-service restaurant was inaugurated.
